Hiking Adventures: Day 116 - Relaxing by the Water (2026)

On day 116 of my journey, I realized that the destination isn't always the most important part of the adventure. It was a day filled with memorable moments, not just miles covered. My morning routine, a well-rehearsed dance of packing and preparing, took its usual hour, even when I tried to rush. But the real journey began when I arrived at Griffith Lake, a serene spot where I had camped the night before. The morning air was calm, and the lake's tranquility was a stark contrast to the bustling world I had left behind.

As I hiked along the lake's edge, the path was a gentle introduction to the day's adventure. It was a pleasant walk, broken only by a brief scramble up Baker Peak, where the sun's warmth welcomed me. But the real highlight of the morning was the discovery of the Big Branch River. The cool water beneath the bridge was a refreshing oasis, and I found myself soaking my legs, joining Birdy and Shooter in their peaceful respite. It was a moment of pure bliss, a highlight that made the rest of the day seem like a bonus.

Little Rock Pond, with its tranquil waters, was another delightful surprise. The heat of the day invited us to take a dip, and we did just that, lounging in the shallows and watching the small rainbow trout and newts swim by. It was a moment of pure relaxation, a break from the usual hiking routine. But even this idyllic spot couldn't deter us from our target destination, and we pushed on, determined to make the most of our day.

The next shelter, a mere 0.2 miles away, was a welcome sight. But it was the discovery of Bully Brook that truly made the day. The abundant water and flat tent sites were a blessing, and we rushed to set up camp, eager to enjoy the evening. Despite the lack of productivity, it was a day filled with joy and unexpected delights. It was a reminder that the journey is just as important as the destination, and sometimes, the most memorable moments are the ones we don't plan for.

In my opinion, this day was a testament to the beauty of the unexpected. It was a day where the miles didn't matter as much as the memories made. And that, in my view, is the true essence of adventure.
